This story was shared with me by a former student in the Holistic Counseling Program at Salve Regina University, Newport RI.

Sandy W. approached me a few weeks back and asked me if I had ever heard the story she was about to share.  She told me that a few years ago, her sister had been diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer and was being treated for the illness.  Six months later, her sister's beloved dog had also fallen ill.  After some tests, the veterinarian informed Sandy's sister that her dog had cancer; it was the same type of cancer that Sandy's sister had.  Blessedly, Sandy W.'s sister survived the cancer, but her dog ultimately died.  Sandy says that her sister believes that her dog "took" the burden of her cancer away, and sacrificed its own life in order to spare hers.

Sandy's story contributes to the growing body of knowledge that suggests a  "Reflexive quality of illness" within the human-canine bond.
